other potential facilities / public safety projects

BBAC members are also considering two other related projects: a new police headquarters and a citywide Facilities Assessment. The current police HQ is outdated and undersized, but no detailed plan or firm budget is in place yet.

The proposed $550,000 Facilities Assessment would evaluate all city buildings — including the police department’s seven locations — to identify long-term needs, costs, and opportunities for consolidation or expansion.

The city manager believes the assessment is a wise first step before committing to the estimated $100 – 110 million for a new police headquarters.

The BBAC is leaning toward including a Facilities Assessment in the bond and using its findings to shape future plans — possibly following up with a separate bond focused on public safety. It’s also possible a police HQ could be built later using other funding or special debt.

Alternatively, the city could include the full HQ funding now, so money is readily available once the Assessment is complete.
